RV refrigerator storage: Defrost, Dry and Leave Doors Ajar
RV refrigerator storage works best when you finish the entire shutdown, not just empty the shelves. Frost becomes water after the power goes off, a closed freezer can stay damp, and a travel latch may hold the door in exactly the wrong position for storage. We recommend treating the refrigerator as its own item on your end-of-season checklist.
Start RV refrigerator storage with the correct shutdown
Find the model number and the shutdown instructions before disconnecting the RV. An absorption refrigerator and a 12-volt compressor refrigerator do not use the same power sources or controls. Use the appliance's OFF procedure and follow its instructions for isolating the energy supplies before cleaning. A warmer thermostat setting is not necessarily an off switch.
For example, Dometic's RM4601 instructions specify switching the energy selector off and shutting the onboard gas valve serving the refrigerator for an extended shutdown. That is a model-specific procedure, not a reason to disconnect gas fittings. Photograph your own model label so the correct manual is easy to find next season.
Let the frost melt before the final wipe-down
Remove food and ice trays, switch the refrigerator off, and allow frost to thaw with the doors open. Put absorbent towels where meltwater will collect and check them during the thaw. A cabinet that looks dry at first can become wet again while ice is still melting.
Do not chip ice away with a knife or speed the job with a hair dryer. Dometic warns that heating appliances can damage plastic surfaces and sharp tools can damage the refrigerator. Give yourself time to finish defrosting before the RV goes into storage.
Clean the hidden places, using the right cleaner
Remove the bins and shelves that your manual identifies as removable. This exposes the spills under drawers and around shelf supports that a quick wipe misses. Clean the door-seal folds gently, then dry the liner, shelves and bins before reassembly.
Cleaner advice varies by part and model. Dometic's Americana guidance specifies a weak lukewarm baking-soda solution for the liner, but warm water only for the evaporator fins, gasket, ice tray and shelves. Strong chemicals and abrasives can damage protective surfaces. Apply cleaning liquid with a cloth rather than spraying near electrical connections or components. Use the storage latch, and remember the freezer
A storage latch holds a ventilation gap; a travel latch keeps the door closed while moving. Identify which setting your refrigerator provides. The Thetford T2095 US manual calls for both the refrigerator door and the frozen-food compartment door to remain open during extended storage and describes its built-in storage lock. That small inner freezer door is easy to overlook. Leaving only the outer door ajar does not follow instructions that call for both to be open. Use the approved storage arrangement for your model instead of forcing something into the gasket. Before moving the RV again, return the doors to their travel-latched positions.
Separate refrigerator care from plumbing winterization
If your refrigerator has an ice maker or water dispenser, include its water supply in the model-specific winterization plan. Empty shelves and an open door do not establish that water has been removed from a supply line or valve. Add that appliance to your checklist alongside the other easy-to-miss water-system components. See our RV winterization checklist.
Make the first trip back easier
Leave a short note with the model number, shutdown steps completed and anything that needs attention, such as a damaged gasket or broken storage latch. Before the next trip, restore the normal door position and follow the manufacturer's startup instructions, allowing cooling time before loading food.
For absorption refrigerators that struggled during your last trip, investigate that problem before packing for the next one. Our guide to refrigerator cooling explains how ventilation affects performance, a separate issue from keeping the cabinet clean and dry during storage.
